The inn dates back to 1189 which reportedly makes Ye Olde
Trip to Jerusalem one of the oldest inns in Britain.
Parts of the Inn were carved out of the sandstone rock
beneath Nottingham Castle, there are several caves and hidden tunnels that run
deep underground and much of the ground level caverns are used as the rear
drinking area.
It is said that part of the Castle Gaol used to be housed
in the cellars of the inn, this includes the condemned mans cell and a smaller
cell with a low ceiling with small holes drilled into it so to allow little air
to flow around. The Gaoler's Chair which was carved out of the rock can
still be seen today.
