The house and estate itself, was first called Alveton Lodge and was originally used as a hunting lodge and summer retreat for the Earl and his family. At the beginning of the 19th century Charles Talbot the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury began to make considerable improvements to the house and it doubled in size, he also initiated the creation of the Gardens which involved the planting of 13,000 trees around the grounds of the house.
In 1811 once again major work was started to improve the house and over the next several years great architects like Thomas Hopper and A.W Pugin were employed to design and over see the work. The work being carried out saw the additions of a dining room, chapel, library,
drawing room, long gallery, banqueting hall, music room, conservatory and a grand entrance hall. All this work saw the build double in size and in 1814 Charles and his family made Alton Towers there main residents.
During the early 1900’s the financial situation of the family altered and this meant that less was
spent on the upkeep of the house and grounds and this was the start of its demise, this continued until the house was finally sold in 1924.
